Summer is one of the best times of the year.
Children get a break from school and time to just enjoy being kids. Adults enjoy the longer daylight hours to work on personal projects and spend time with family and friends.
This is also the time of year that many families schedule vacations and take lots of pictures during those trips.
Many of those pictures will be shared with family and friends on social media. So … why not visit Legacy Smiles as part of your vacation preparation? We can help you get your smile looking its best at our dentist office in Billings, MT.
Start With A Cleaning
The first step to creating a picture-perfect smile is making sure your mouth is healthy and your teeth are clean.
We hope you are following the American Dental Association recommendation at home. That means brushing your teeth for two minutes twice per day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. It also means cleaning between your teeth daily with dental floss or another interdental cleaner.
And it means getting professional dental cleanings and exams a few times each year. Our team at Legacy Smiles would be happy to look at your teeth. We will remove any plaque or tartar and polish your smile when we are finished.
We’ll also be looking for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease. We would rather find it and take care of these kinds of problems before your vacation begins. You don’t want to wake up with a toothache on the first day of your trip.
Then Whiten Your Smile
When you make your appointment, ask about our professional teeth whitening, too. There’s no better time to have your teeth whitened than after a dental cleaning.
At our dentist office in Billings, MT, we have two teeth whitening options.
The first is our in-office whitening with Opalescence Boost. This whitening gel has several advantages that you may appreciate — in addition to your whiter smile!
First, Opalescence Boost is chemically activated. When we apply the gel to your teeth, it does not require hot light to work. Second, this gel has both fluoride and potassium nitrate. This can help strengthen the enamel of your teeth and reduce the teeth sensitivity that can occur after a whitening treatment.
Third, with our in-office treatment, you could see a visible change in your smile in about an hour.
If you have a little time before your vacation, you may prefer our take-home whitening option. With this, we create a custom-fitted set of whitening trays just for your teeth. Then we give you whitening gel and show you how to apply it.
When used as directed, you can whiten your smile at your convenience in just a few weeks. Once you have the trays, you can keep them to help touch-up your smile on your own.
Pay Attention To The Water
Water may play a vital role in your vacation plans and throughout the summer. There are a few things we would encourage you to keep in mind.
➧ Drinking water is good for your teeth.
You should drink water more often than you do soft drinks or sports drinks. Those last two can contain as much sugar as a candy bar. Like a candy bar, it’s OK to have one every now and then, but you don’t need them all the time.
Water also helps to avoid dehydration and dry mouth. You understand that staying hydrated is good for your overall health. Avoiding dry mouth is good for your oral health. When your mouth is dry, you are at a greater risk of cavities and gum disease.
➧ Pay attention to your chlorine exposure.
Jumping in a pool is a great way to cool off and relax on a hot summer day. Just know what you are jumping into.
Chlorine can affect the pH level of water. The Centers for Disease Control reports that safe pH is between 7.2 and 7.8. You can test this yourself with test strips that you can purchase at many stores or online.
When the pH is 7 or lower, this can weaken the enamel of your teeth. At the same time, long-term exposure to chlorine can hurt your teeth as well. Researchers have found that people who spend six or more hours per week in chemically-treated pools are more likely to develop swimmer’s calculus. This can make your teeth look yellow or brown.
