Today I have a few facts to share with you about missing teeth. There is much more to missing teeth than meets the eye. This problem affects millions of Americans. It’s devastating for people’s appearance, confidence, and even overall well-being.

Missing teeth change your appearance

When you lose any tooth, you’ll experience a number of changes in your face. Your teeth are held in by the jawbone, and when the teeth are lost, the jawbone will recede. This process can happen rather quickly, over the course of a few months, and it only gets worse with time. If you are missing one tooth, the jawbone recession will affect the alignment and appearance of your healthy remaining teeth.

If you have no remaining teeth, jawbone recession will actually cause your chin and nose to grow closer. People without teeth also tend to develop wrinkles around their mouth. Of course, a collapsed jawbone and wrinkles around the mouth will cause you to look much older than you really are. That’s not something any of us wants!

Missing teeth steal your confidence

Without teeth, it’s hard to smile with confidence and you’re constantly worried about eating the foods you love. Even patients with removable dentures have trouble eating. I have met many patients who are struggling with missing teeth. They tell me about their problems with dentures. They often use adhesives to stabilize their dentures, but ultimately, the denture still comes loose — or they must reapply the adhesive several times a day. Because the removable dentures — especially the bottom denture — has a tendency to slide around in the mouth. Having missing teeth and even removable dentures often means a number of food restrictions. Think about what this does anytime you’re eating with friends or even on a lunch break at work. It can be extremely frustrating.

Missing teeth destroy your health

The mouth is the gateway to your body. What you eat matters, and so your teeth are quite important. People without teeth have trouble maintaining good health because of the food restrictions. These people often switch to a soft-food diet and avoid healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and healthy nuts — mostly because they have become nearly impossible for them to chew and digest.

You might think that missing teeth are strictly an oral health problem. Not true. Having missing teeth is a full-fledged overall health crisis. According to the Mayo Clinic, people without their natural teeth reduce their life expectancy by about 10 years!
