Hello and welcome to our dental health blog!
At Legacy Smiles, we have been serving Billings, Montana and the surrounding communities for more than 25 years. Even though we have been around for awhile now, we always strive to stay up to date with the latest dental technology and to provide a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. Most importantly, we try to build meaningful relationships with our patients. We do it all just so YOU can have the healthiest and happiest life possible.
You may have noticed that oral cancer screenings have become a routine part of our dental exams. This is because we want to try and detect it early enough to do something about it before it is too late for conservative treatments.
You can trust that we will do our part when you come in for your six month checkup. But it will be up to you to pay attention to any changes in-between office visits.
Some of the telltale signs of oral cancer include: white, red, or speckled lumpy spots; sores; raised bumps; open wounds; ulcers; bleeding in the mouth; pain when swallowing; difficulty moving your jaw; etc.
Early treatment will go a long way towards ensuring the best outcome for you.
That said, prevention is even better!
That’s why today we want to look at some of the causes of oral cancer, and how you can reduce your risk of contracting this deadly disease.
Studies indicate that tobacco use is the leading cause of oral cancer in the country.
If you don’t currently use tobacco, don’t start. It dramatically increases your risk of oral and many, many other kinds of cancer. If you already smoke, chew, dip, or vape, NOW is the time to quit!
Alcohol abuse is another major risk factor when it comes to oral cancer.
And if you smoke and drink, that is a double-whammy. You see, alcohol dries out the soft tissues of your mouth. This can make it easier for the chemicals in tobacco to get into those tissues.
Don’t load your body with junk. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can actually lower your risk for mouth cancer.
It’s alright to have a little fun in the sun, just not too much. Sunburns have been linked not only to skin cancer, but to cancer on your lips as well.
Genetics play a role in this. If you have a history of cancer your likelihood of developing oral cancer is much higher, which means you will need to be more cautious when it comes to the factors that you can control.
Like we said, next to prevention, early diagnosis is the best way to beat oral cancer.
Stopping by our office every six months will go along way towards keeping you healthy and happy.
At Legacy Smiles, we have the sort of tools and training you just can’t get access to at home. Our modern screening technologies will allow us to spot and contain the spread of cancer sooner.
