In our Billings, Montana office our mission is all about YOU. We are here to help keep your mouth clean and your smile looking great all through life. Sometimes we have to have tough talks with the families entrusted to our care.

Today, we want to touch on one such topic that impacts us all at some point: bad breath.

Have you ever had to interact closely with someone and you suddenly realize that your breath (or their breath) is offensive?

It could be that you had too many onions in your salad at lunch or you forgot to brush your teeth that morning. Everybody has those ill-timed moments of close interaction every once in awhile.

That is embarrassing enough. But what about those poor souls who are afflicted with bad breath all the time? At this very practice, we have seen plenty of amazing patients who unfortunately suffer from a condition known as halitosis.

If you can relate, there is nothing to be ashamed about. What we want you to know is that there is plenty you can do to make your situation better.

Drink Water Often

Staying hydrated is great for you body but it is also one of the best things you can do to ward off foul-smelling breath. Saliva naturally eliminates bacteria in your mouth causing the bad breath, but in order for saliva to be produced, you need to drink plenty of water. The added perk for you is that in many places the water is infused with fluoride which will further protect your smile!

Mints Aren’t Helping

When you sense that your breath is bad, it’s natural to want to eat a mint, cover it up, and go on with your day. Unfortunately, mints are loaded with sugar. And after the mint is gone, all that is left is a sugary residue that actually feeds the bacteria causing your breath problems. It is better to chew on some sugar-free gum instead.

Don’t Forget To Floss

Fighting chronic bad breath is really a matter of battling bacteria. Flossing is a great weapon in this never-ending siege. Floss twice a day to better beat down the bacteria that hides out in-between your teeth.

Your Tongue Matters

You may not realize it, but your tongue matters. If you struggle with breath issues, take the time to scrape and brush your tongue twice a day. This can make a big difference.
