Now if you have ever had a picture, if you ever had a picture where you had a nice frame and the picture itself was good but as it hung on the wall, something, your eyes, something was strange about the picture. You couldn't figure out what it was and you would stare at it and stare at it and stare at it and think it was the picture. If you examine it closely, you may discover that, wait a minute, it is not the picture at all. It is the border. The border is thicker across the top and thinner across the bottom or thicker or thinner, it is asymmetrical, it is just not right. That border adds symmetry to your picture so the gums are like the border.

Quite frequently, people look at their smile and they just don't like it. “Oh, my teeth are way too short,” and that just genetically, they are too short. Often that is not it at all – it is the border. It is the gums. They have got too much gum tissue there. All we have to do is take our laser and recontour that gum tissue to expose more of the natural tooth, and then what that does is that brings the teeth themselves, suddenly, into perfect symmetry. Our minds are incredibly adept at picking out something that is symmetrical versus not symmetrical. Our brains do it automatically. It is only when it is out of proportion that things, that our mind tells us that that is not really appealing. The gums quite often are a very quick way of just redoing some contouring of those gums. For one, we are making them the right shape. For number two, we are exposing the natural tooth structure and put the teeth back in the proper symmetry.

Women understand it really easy when I tell them it is kind of like reshaping your nails and getting rid of extra cuticle. That cuticle grows down, makes your nails look shorter. Well, soon as we get rid of that and expose more of that natural pretty nail structure, your nails look longer, more elegant, they just look more attractive. By the same token, we are doing much the same thing by reshaping with reshaping the gum tissue.

Reshaping Your Smile

How to fix a gummy smile? There is one main reason why one might elect to undergo gum contouring and gum reshaping treatment: to improve their appearance. This treatment is almost completely cosmetic, meaning that we reshape gum lines purely for aesthetic purposes. When you choose this gum reshaping treatment, you will experience results that will make your smile appear brighter and more pleasing to the eye. First impressions are everything, and confidence in your new smile will help you make the impression you want to make.

The WaterLase is kind of a cool concept. What it is, is lasers generate heat, so cutting teeth with that much heat is generally not a good idea. It fries the nerves on the inside of the tooth, and then we have a whole 'nother problem. Someone ingeniously created a laser where a focused beam of water comes out and then the laser focuses on that water and accelerates the water molecules. It's a hydrokinetic cut, meaning it will keep the tooth cool in the water, but because of the accelerated water molecules it will actually cut the tooth. We have a lot of years of experience with that laser now. It will cut hard tissue, meaning teeth, and it will also cut soft tissue just by changing the settings. It's the one piece of equipment that the FDA has approved for actually cutting teeth and doing everything that we do with it.

Of course we can change the settings on that and not use water if we need to do a biopsy or a frenectomy or something like that. We can totally change, we have total control of all those parameters. The fact that it's such a versatile piece of equipment and we're able to cut the tooth structure with it as well as soft tissue makes it really cool.

Then the one aspect of it that enhances it even more is that in most cases, we don't have you give you anesthetic. That's really awesome because even when you do painless injections, it still leaves people numb, and they often don't like to be numb. When we can use the laser and not have to use any anesthetic whatsoever – wow, people walk out of here feeling like a million bucks because they got their procedure done, they were comfortable, it was quicker, and they're out the door without any anesthetic and two or three hours of being numb.

Our Laser Technology
At our Billings, MT dentist office, we use BIOLASE WaterLase laser technology to reshape your gum line. This method of practice is the best there is, outshining methods using a scalpel or electrosurgery. This gum reshaping treatment procedure is safe, highly effective, and requires less healing time.

  • It’s safe. Our BIOLASE laser technology is a safe way to get the smile you desire. Compared to other methods, our laser therapy causes less pain and discomfort after the procedure. Using laser technology also results in almost zero bleeding. Other methods, such as using a scalpel or electrosurgery, may causing more bleeding and higher levels of postoperative discomfort.
  • It is highly effective. Did you know that our BIOLASE laser technology is more precise than other methods? With this technology, we have higher levels of control and are able to achieve precision that is not possible with a scalpel or electrosurgery. Not only will you experience less discomfort, but you will also achieve the exact results you desire.
  • It requires less healing time. Because of our WaterLase laser’s minimally invasive nature, it heals more quickly than other methods. Cut down on pain, increase the effectiveness, and revel in the quicker healing process.

Our Billings, MT dentist uses BIOLASE WaterLase laser technology, which outshines even other types of lasers. Many dental offices use diode lasers. Diode lasers work better than the scalpel or electrosurgery methods but are still inferior to the WaterLase. Diode lasers work by emitting a beam of light, sometimes producing hot and uncomfortable results. The WaterLase laser uses a combination of light, water, and air to complete a precise, pain-free procedure. We believe the WaterLase is superior to diode lasers when sculpting soft tissues.
