What Are Dental Implants and How Do They Work?

If someone has lost a tooth, an implant is literally replacing the root structure of that tooth. We're literally placing an artificial root in the bone, and then at the end, building a tooth on top of that to fill in the gap. It preserves natural tooth structure by not having to be as invasive with a bridge. That allows us to put a single to restore that, but putting a single tooth in there.

The implants – quick and easy. A single tooth implant can take as little as 20 minutes to do it, done under local anesthesia. It's just like we make a small incision, small incision of the gums, move those aside, make a very precise osteotomy, which is a fancy term for hole in the bone, the size of our implant. We slide it down in, lock it in, and put another stich or two across that gum tissue, and it heals. We let that heal in the bone for as little as two to three months, depending on the quality of the bone and the placement of where we're at in the mouth, it may take as much as six months. Basically, the bone is growing in around that implant and locking it in tight.

Then we will uncover the top of the implant and add a piece to it to extend it above the gum line, and then we can grab that and put a crown on it.

What are dental implants? Dental implants is the most effective type of dental restoration to replace missing teeth. Teeth implants are placed by surgically inserting the implant, or prosthetic tooth root, directly into your gums. Traditional implants is the type that needs to heal and fuse with the bone before the restoration process starts. Other types of implants, such as mini implants, are immediate load implants wherein you do not have to wait for the healing process to get your replacement tooth. After the implant is healed, a crown is constructed and secured in it to mimic your natural tooth. These replacement teeth become a permanent part of your mouth and look and feel just like your natural teeth.

Legacy Smiles offers many different types of dental implant procedure including mini implants, All-on-4, All-on-6, and implant-retained dentures. We also offer a Same Day Smile option, where your smile can be restored in just one day. Talk to Dr. Stuart about which option is right for you.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants have many great benefits. Let’s talk about some of them:

  1. They restore almost 100 percent of your natural chewing ability. No more chewing on one side of your mouth, eating soft, tasteless food.
  2. They look and feel just like your natural teeth. We create all of our restorations with life-like detail.
  3. They help to preserve your oral health. This deterioration can pose a threat to the surrounding teeth and possibly your whole mouth. Implants stop this loss of bone mass. Simply brush and floss like normal!
  4. They boost your confidence. No more worrying about what you look like, what you can eat, or how you can act. Dental implants allow for a life free of worry about your teeth. Get back to living the life you want to live.
